I have
recently developed an obsession with podcasts. There’s something about
listening to other people’s deep and meaningful conversations that is incredibly
therapeutic. I listen to podcasts when I’m walking the dog, when I’m having a
shower, when I’m cleaning the house and when I’m driving the car and it makes
me feel like I have really interesting, intelligent and successful friends there
with me. So, when I choose a podcast to listen to I tend to steer towards podcasts
with strong, successful, female leads. Sorry guys, but I feel like a man’s
point of view doesn’t explicitly apply to me, so ain’t nobody got time for
that.
However,
after seeing The Tim Ferris Show in the top podcasts every week and hearing amazing
reviews again and again, I gave him a chance, and I haven’t looked back since.
Although not all of his podcasts are applicable to me or spark my interest,
here are the five Tim Ferris podcasts that every woman needs to listen to.
Whitney
Wolfe Herd – Founder and CEO of Bumble
“Spirituality comes out in moments of
darkness.” –
Whitney Wolfe Herd
This is the
podcast that first introduced me to Whitney Wolfe Herd. After hearing her story
about how she turned a traumatizing business situation into an amazing
opportunity, I was so inspired! So much so that it inspired me to start Super Successful Women Sunday’s, where every Sunday I write a blog post about amazing
career women and their success stories. If you want to hear about how Whitney
turned a bad experience and a desire to help women into a $1 Billion company, along with how
she dealt with online bullies, corporate sexism and anxiety, I highly suggest
listening to this podcast episode.
Karlie
Kloss – Entrepreneur and Supermodel
“Everybody
has the opportunity to build something.” – Karlie Kloss
I’ve never
really been one to obsess over popular celebrities or be inspired by models.
That was until I listened to Karlie Kloss on The Tim Ferris Show. Karlie is
intelligent, curious and extremely interesting. Outside of modelling, Karlie
has a passion for learning. She has recently enrolled in college and has even learnt
how to code. Her passion for coding led her to launch Kode With Klossy, a non-profit
that empowers young women to code and become leaders in tech. Time Magazine has
recognized Karlie for her entrepreneurship and philanthropic work on its 100
Most Influential People list, and she has also been featured on the covers of
Fast Company and Forbes for her work with Kode with Klossy. In this podcast, Karlie
talks about how she stays grounded, how she fits her passions around her busy
schedule and the power of meditation.
Cheryl
Strayed – How to Be Creative Like a Motherf*cker
“One of the scariest things in our lives is
actually doing what we know we want to do.” – Cheryl Strayed
One of my
all-time favourite writers, Cheryl Strayed, talks about creation, note taking,
list making and handling hard emotions in this inspiring podcast episode. At
the age of 27, a few years after her mother died suddenly, Cheryl ‘strayed’
from her marriage and decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail to find herself
again. Cheryl’s book Wild is one of
my all-time favourite books and I feel as though everything she says applies
directly to me. She is a modern-day poet and an inspirational teacher. Every
young woman can learn a lot from her.
Debbie
Milman – How to Design a Life
“Hard decisions are only hard when you’re in
the process of making them.” – Debbie Millman
One of the
most influential graphic designers working today, Debbie Milman, walks us
through gripping stories of pain, rejection, shame, humour and emotional
redemption. In the most downloaded podcast of all time and one that Tim Ferris
calls “the most important podcast episode
you will ever listen to”, Debbie discusses the importance of knowing the exact
location you want to end up in. She states that her lifelong desire to live in
Manhattan influenced her pursuit of happiness and what she does today, and she
walks you through your very own “ten-year
plan for a remarkable life”.
Kara
Swisher – The Most Feared and Well-Liked Journalist in Silicon Valley
“Smart people like to be challenged and they
like smart people challenging them.” – Kara Swisher
As someone
who works around journalists, I was extremely intrigued by Kara Swisher. She’s bold,
fearless, extremely witty, and doesn’t take shit from anyone (including Steve Jobs).
Originally, she started training to be a foreign spy, but she changed course to
become a journalist. Now she is the most successful, and the most feared, technology journalist in America. What I like most about this podcast is Kara’s
unique perspective. As an incredibly successful woman, she is exceptionally
confident, tactical, brutal and extremely intimidating; but she isn’t apologising for anything. Every woman can learn a thing or two from Kara about holding
their own around powerful people and standing up for what they believe in.
