Three years ago, during my gap year, I found myself sitting in a cubicle of a financial services office answering calls from superannuation companies for twelve dollars an hour. I would drive an hour to get to work as the sun came up, where I would work for eight hours in a job I hated, and then drive an hour to get home as the sun was setting. To put it bluntly, that is no ones idea of #livingthedream.
So, with no plan and barely any savings, I quit. Well not that abruptly but I did make a plan to quit.. With a few thousand dollars of debt to pay off I had to get my shit together and change my life. Over the course of a few months I paid off my debt, saved every pay check thereafter, booked a holiday to Bali, and handed in my resignation. With no plan, no job prospects, barely any money, and only my faith in the universe I made the decision to venture out of my comfort zone and into the 'unknown'.
The day I quit I received a call from a job I didn't even remember applying for because I didn't believe I had a chance. After the interview I got on a plane to Bali and when I landed I had an email offering me the job. There I worked happily for many years until I left to travel Europe and eventually moved to Melbourne to follow my aspirations to work in Media.
I would not be where I am now if I didn't have the courage at such a young age to push myself out of my comfort zone and chase the life I wanted. Although I am no where near where I want to be, I'm no longer sitting in a cubical wondering if it's a nice day outside, or counting down the days until the week end. However, as I reflect, I can appreciate the life lessons I learnt during that dark period of my life;
- There's never going to be a right time, the time is now.
- Even if you don't know what you want to do with your life, don't do what you don't want to do.
- If you don't have passion, go and find it.
- Trust your instincts and have faith in the power of the universe.
- It is better to have tried and failed, than to be stuck in a fluorescently lit cubicle doing a job that doesn't serve you.
- One day you have to decide where you want to go, and you have to start going there.
- Leave your comfort zone, nothing grows there.
- Don't tolerate a mediocre life. Change nothing and nothing will change.
- To change the course of your life all you need to do is leap into the unknown.
- Whatever happens next will be better than what you have left behind.
